What are the BDH High Energy Bars?

BDH High Energy Bars are an Emergency or Survival Ration designed to be both long lasting and delicious at the same time. The manufacturer of these bars has been producing Emergency Food Supplies and MRE's (meals ready to eat) for a long time now, and these particular bars are becoming increasingly popular. You can find them for sale in Australia, Canada, the United States of America, Germany and England as well as a number of other countries. They make an excellent addition to your Survival Kit, Grab Bag, Emergency Preparedness' Supplies, but they are also an excellent addition to your tramping pack, hunting pack or for use during any outdoor activities.

What makes these Emergency Food Rations different to those already on the New Zealand Market?

To begin with one of the most unique selling points of these emergency food rations is their incredible shelf-life. From the date of manufacture these bars have a shelf-life of 20 years. The average shelf-life for similar rations in New Zealand, or anywhere else in the world for that matter, is 5 years. The extra 15 years means that you don't have to worry about stock rotation for a considerable period of time. You can simply purchase the rations and then put them aside, knowing that for the next 20 years you will have a shelf stable emergency food source ready to go when disaster strikes. Being in a unique location on the ring of fire, New Zealand is at constant risk from Natural Disasters, and that is the reason having a good supply of food available is essential. 

Another big selling point of these Emergency Food Rations, is their flavour profiles. They come in both Peanut and Chocolate. Most other rations on the market come in a plain vanilla or shortbread flavour profile, and while we do intend to bring in some of the BDH High Energy Bars in their original flavour, we have gone with these two because they add a very different choice to the market. 

The chocolate Rations have a very mild chocolate flavour to them, and are mildly sweet. The Peanut rations also have a mild peanut flavour to them, and while they are peanut flavoured, they do not contain any real peanuts as per the manufacturer. We have sent these off to the New Zealand testing labs to confirm this and the Test Results can be found on the website. 

S.O.L.A.S Approved Maritime Rations?

We have not yet sent these rations for testing at this stage but it is something that we are considering. They certainly meet all the requirements for S.O.L.A.S Lifeboat or Life Raft Rations. They are double packed wrapped in a plastic protective sleeve, and then vacuumed packed in external packaging. This packaging is very robust and withstands transport and storage. They have tear tabs on the side of them which means they can be easily opened even if wearing gloves, say in am emersion suit or in cold conditions. They are pressed into shapes which make them easy to portion out for rationing during a disaster.  And you can pick and chose how many you want to make up the number of calories needed depending on the time your are preparing for.

How do they work?

These energy bars are made from high-quality flour, sugar and other raw materials, processed and cooked and then pressed into their final form. They are the packaged and finally sealed ready for use. These are in a highly compacted powder form, meaning that they are very easy to digest and as such require much less water to be processed through the body. They are designed to be non thirst provoking, which is essential during a time of disaster when access to clean drinking water may be sparse.
